What to Wear to a Spray Tan Appointment (And After)
The exact clothing guide for spray tan appointments — what to wear in, what to wear after, what to avoid, and how to protect your tan for the first 8 hours.
The clothing rule is simpler than you think
The spray tan clothing rule comes down to two words: loose and dark.
Loose, because tight clothing compresses the skin while DHA is developing and creates light lines and pressure marks. Dark, because spray tan solution can transfer onto light-colored fabric before it fully sets — usually permanently.
Everything else is a variation of these two principles.
What to wear TO your appointment
Bottom half
- Loose, dark shorts (athletic shorts or basketball shorts)
- Loose, dark sweatpants or joggers
- Loose dark yoga pants with no tight waistbands or compression
**Avoid:** Leggings, skinny jeans, tight shorts, underwear with elastic waistbands (the waistband leaves a visible line)
Top half
- Loose, dark t-shirt (a worn, old one is best — solution can stain even after development)
- Loose hoodie or sweatshirt (dark color)
**Avoid:** Fitted tops, sports bras with compression straps, crop tops (if you want any body coverage after the appointment)
Underwear
For the appointment itself, most clients wear a disposable thong or go without. Your artist will provide disposable coverings. If you wear underwear, it will leave tan lines — which may or may not matter depending on the look you want.
**If you want bikini tan lines:** Wear the bikini or underwear you want the lines around.
**If you want an even, no-line result:** Wear nothing or a disposable covering provided by your artist.
Footwear
Flip flops or slip-on shoes — no socks, no sneakers, no boots. Your feet and ankles need to be free for the application and cannot be compressed by socks after.
Hair
Wear your hair up or back. Solution can stain hair at the hairline. Pull it back into a bun or ponytail. If you have short hair, your artist will use a protective spray or cover at the hairline.
Jewelry and makeup
Remove jewelry before the appointment. Rings and bracelets create tan lines on wrists. Earrings and necklaces can trap solution and create marks around ears and neck.
Go to your appointment with minimal or no makeup. Foundation, sunscreen, and setting spray all interfere with DHA bonding. A bare face gets the most even result.
What to wear AFTER your appointment
The 8 hours after your appointment are when DHA develops fully. What you wear during this window matters as much as what you wore in.
The non-negotiable outfit
- Your same loose, dark clothes from the appointment
- Flip flops
- No bra (or a loose sports bra with no underwire and minimal elastic marks)
If you absolutely must wear a bra after, choose the loosest, softest option you own and accept that there may be some strap marks.
No gym clothes or workout gear
Athletic compression clothing — leggings, bike shorts, compression shirts, sports bras — should be avoided for at least 6–8 hours after your appointment. The compression creates noticeable lines while the DHA is setting.
Sleeping after a spray tan
If your rinse window extends overnight:
- Sleep on dark sheets (old ones you do not mind staining)
- Wear loose PJs — dark cotton, full-length or knee-length, no elastic waistbands pressing against skin
- Sleep alone or warn your partner about transfer
- No socks to bed
What to avoid for the first 8 hours
Beyond clothing, these activities affect your tan during the development window:
| Activity | Why to avoid |
| --------- | ------------- |
|---|---|
| Rain or water contact | Streaks developing DHA |
| Hot shower or bath | Stops DHA development early |
| Tight seat belts | Can leave marks across the torso |
| Gym workout | Both sweating and compression clothing |
| Sauna or steam room | Heat strips developing color |
If you have a seat belt that crosses your torso tightly, put a thin dark cloth between the belt and your skin for the drive home.
After your first rinse
After you rinse and pat dry, you can return to normal clothing — with a few ongoing cautions:
**For the duration of your tan (5–10 days):**
- Avoid white or very light-colored clothing if your tan might still transfer slightly (this is rare after the first rinse but possible if the tan is very fresh)
- Avoid tight clothing in areas where the tan was heaviest (it can cause faster fading in those spots)
- Avoid extended chlorine or saltwater exposure (it strips color)
Clothing by occasion
| Occasion | Before | After |
| --------- | -------- | ------- |
|---|---|---|
| Bridal trial or day-of | Same | White/light dress OK after 8 hours and first rinse |
| Event that night | See your artist for rapid-rinse option | Dress after first rinse (1–2 hour window) |
| Pool or beach next day | Normal prep | Go after your first rinse; bring tan extender |
Frequently asked questions
Can I wear white to my spray tan appointment?
No. Wear dark colors only. Solution transfers onto light fabric easily.
What if I want tan lines for a specific swimsuit?
Bring the swimsuit to your appointment and wear it during the session. Your artist will tan around it and you will have exactly the lines the suit creates.
What about fake nails and eyelash extensions?
Both are fine. Your artist will apply barrier cream around nail beds and be careful near lash extensions. Mention both when you book so your artist is prepared.
How long until I can wear tight jeans after a spray tan?
Wait until after your first rinse (minimum 1–4 hours depending on your solution type) and allow the skin to fully dry after rinsing. Most artists recommend at least 8–10 hours total before wearing anything restrictive.
