How to Prepare for a Spray Tan: The Night-Before Checklist Pros Use
The exact prep steps professional spray tan artists give their clients before every appointment — so your tan lasts longer, develops evenly, and looks flawless.
Why prep matters more than the solution
The most common spray tan disappointments — patchiness, dark knees and elbows, early fading — are almost always prep failures, not solution failures. Professional spray tan artists know this: a client who follows the pre-appointment checklist gets a noticeably better result than a client who skips it.
This is the checklist pros give their clients before every appointment. Follow it and your tan will develop more evenly, last longer, and look exactly the way your artist intended.
24–48 hours before your appointment
Exfoliate thoroughly
Dead skin cells block DHA absorption and create patchy, uneven color. Exfoliate 24–48 hours before your appointment — not the day of, not the morning of. Exfoliation right before your tan removes the surface layer DHA needs to grab onto.
**What to use:**
- A physical exfoliating scrub or exfoliating mitt in the shower
- Focus on elbows, knees, heels, and ankles — the areas where skin is thickest and exfoliation is most critical
- Avoid oil-based scrubs; the residue interferes with DHA bonding
**What not to use:**
- Chemical exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs, retinol) within 48 hours — they affect skin pH and can cause uneven development
Wax or shave (not the day of)
Waxing opens pores and temporarily sensitizes skin. Spray tanning immediately after waxing causes uneven absorption and can make the tan appear patchy. Wax at least 48 hours before your appointment — 72 hours is better.
Shaving is the same story: a fresh razor leaves micro-abrasions and opens follicles. Shave 24 hours before, not the morning of your appointment.
The night before
Skip the moisturizer
This sounds counterintuitive, but lotion — especially thick body butters, oils, or self-tanner — creates a barrier that prevents DHA from penetrating evenly. Do not apply any body lotion, oil, or moisturizer the night before or the morning of your appointment.
**Exception:** Dry skin clients should consult their artist. If your skin is extremely dry, a light water-based lotion 24 hours before (not 12 hours before) can help. Tell your artist.
Remove nail polish if you want to preserve it
DHA does not stain nail polish, but the solution can seep under chips or edges and create a line. If you have a fresh manicure or pedicure you want to protect, mention it to your artist — they will apply barrier cream around your nails.
Lay out your appointment outfit
You will need to wear loose, dark, non-tight clothing to your appointment and keep it on for hours after. See what to wear to a spray tan appointment for the full breakdown, but at minimum: baggy dark shorts or sweatpants, a loose dark top, and flip flops or slip-on shoes.
Morning of your appointment
No deodorant
Deodorant reacts with DHA and causes green or grey streaking in the underarm area. Skip it entirely on the day of your appointment. Tell your artist if you applied it earlier — they can address the area before spraying.
No perfume, lotion, or makeup
Your skin should be clean and product-free when your artist applies the solution. Perfume, face sunscreen, moisturizer, and makeup all interfere with DHA bonding.
**Exception:** A light, clean face is fine. If you have a full face of makeup and are getting a face tan, tell your artist — most will work around it or can suggest cleaning the face before the face application.
No tight clothing before the appointment
Tight waistbands, bra straps, and socks leave lines that tan around unevenly. Wear loose clothing to your appointment so there are no compression marks on your skin when the solution is applied.
Shower and dry completely
Arrive clean with completely dry skin. Damp skin creates DHA absorption problems — the solution will not take evenly on areas that are still wet from your shower.
During your appointment
Trust your artist's positioning
Your artist knows the angles. Stand where they tell you, rotate as directed, and raise your arms and legs as asked. The application position affects how the solution falls on your body.
Mention any concerns upfront
First appointment? Tell your artist. Getting married in 3 days? Tell your artist. Sensitive skin or known DHA sensitivity? Tell your artist. The more context they have, the more they can customize the application.
Ask about rinse time
Before you leave, confirm your rinse window. Most artists will tell you, but it is your tan — confirm the timing for the solution they used. Better yet, if they use Bronzly, your rinse reminder comes automatically via SMS.
After your appointment — the first 8 hours
These hours determine your final result. Protect them.
No sweating
Exercise, hot yoga, saunas, and steam rooms open pores and cause DHA to develop unevenly. Stay cool and dry until your first rinse.
No water contact
Rain, swimming, and even a stray water splash can create streaks before the DHA has fully developed. Take an umbrella if it looks like rain.
No tight clothing
Wear your loose dark outfit home and keep it on until you rinse. Elastic waistbands, bra straps, and tight sleeves create dark lines where they compress the skin.
Wait for your rinse reminder
Rinse when your artist tells you to — or when Bronzly's automated rinse reminder arrives. Rinsing too early stops development and produces a lighter-than-expected result. Rinsing too late on a rapid solution can cause over-development.
When you rinse: use cool water, no soap on the first rinse, and pat dry — do not rub.

Frequently asked questions
Can I shave the day of my spray tan?
No. Shave at least 24 hours before. Same-day shaving leaves micro-abrasions that cause uneven DHA absorption.
What if I forget to exfoliate before my appointment?
Tell your artist. They can do a dry exfoliation at the appointment or apply more solution to areas that tend to be thick. But a proper pre-appointment exfoliation 24–48 hours before is significantly better.
Can I wear a bra to my spray tan?
You can, but it will leave a tan line. Most artists prefer clients to remove bras so they can spray evenly across the back. You will wear a disposable covering provided by your artist.
What happens if I sweat after my tan?
Light perspiration within the first few hours can cause streaking. If you sweat heavily after your appointment, tell your artist so they can advise whether to retouch before your final rinse.
