Sunless Tanning

Sunless tanning is the umbrella category for any method of producing a tanned skin appearance without exposure to UV radiation. The category includes professional spray tan services, at-home self-tan lotions and mousses, tanning towelettes, and bronzing pills (which are not FDA-approved). The vast majority of sunless tanning products use DHA as the active ingredient. The global sunless tanning products market is projected to reach $1.6B by 2030 at a 5–7% CAGR (Grand View Research). Professional spray tan is the fastest-growing sub-segment, displacing both UV tanning bed visits and at-home self-tan as consumers prioritize a more polished result with no UV risk. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends sunless tanning as a safer alternative to UV tanning beds, which the WHO classifies as a Group 1 carcinogen alongside tobacco and asbestos. Sunless tanning provides essentially zero UV protection — broad-spectrum SPF 30+ is still required outdoors.
