Airbrush vs HVLP

Two spray gun technologies; airbrush is higher-pressure and more precise, HVLP is lower-pressure and softer.

Airbrush and HVLP are the two competing spray gun technologies in professional spray tanning. Airbrush guns operate at 25+ PSI and produce a tightly focused, high-precision spray pattern, ideal for detail work like contouring and shading. HVLP (high-volume low-pressure) guns operate at 3–5 PSI and produce a wider, softer mist, ideal for full-body coverage with less overspray and less solution waste. Most professional spray tan artists use HVLP as the primary gun because it covers the body faster and produces a more uniform finish. Some artists keep an airbrush gun as a secondary tool for contour work — adding shadow definition to abs, collarbones, and cheekbones for competition or special-event clients. Airbrush guns are typically cheaper ($50–$200) than HVLP setups ($300–$1,200) but require an external air compressor. The artist's choice between airbrush and HVLP is style-driven; both can deliver excellent results in skilled hands.
