HVLP (High-Volume Low-Pressure)

The spray gun technology used by most professional spray tan artists.

HVLP — high-volume low-pressure — describes the spray gun and turbine technology that delivers spray tan solution as a fine atomized mist at low working pressure (typically 3–5 PSI). HVLP guns produce a softer, more controllable spray pattern than airbrush guns (which run at 25+ PSI) and waste less solution as overspray, making them the standard for professional spray tan studios. Common HVLP brands include Norvell, Sjolie, Aviva, Maxi-Mist, and Apollo. A complete HVLP setup costs $300–$1,200 for the turbine unit plus $80–$300 for the gun. The artist controls deposit by adjusting trigger pressure, distance from skin (typically 6–10 inches), and pass speed. Maintenance is minimal — most artists rinse the gun cup with water between clients and deep-clean weekly. HVLP guns last 3–5 years with normal use. The HVLP standard is one reason spray tan booth results look noticeably worse than hand-applied artist tans: booths use static nozzles that cannot match HVLP's adaptive depth and angle.
