Barrier Cream

Thick moisturizer applied to dry-skin areas before tanning to prevent over-absorption.

Barrier cream is a thick moisturizer applied immediately before spray tan to areas of skin that absorb DHA more aggressively — typically knuckles, elbows, knees, ankles, wrists, palms, and the soles of the feet. These areas have thicker stratum corneum and less hydration, so they pull DHA into deeper skin layers and produce dark uneven patches if not protected. The artist applies a small amount of barrier cream (often a thicker face moisturizer, dedicated barrier balm, or even chapstick on cuticles) seconds before spraying. Without barrier cream, knuckles and elbows commonly turn 2–3 shades darker than surrounding skin — the single most common spray tan complaint. Some artists also apply barrier cream to nail beds and the corners of the eyes/mouth. Most professional barrier creams are clear or lightly tinted so the artist can see where they've applied. Barrier cream is included in standard appointment supplies and is not typically charged as an add-on.
